Rose Preparing for Virginia Tech

Peter Rose turned in an outstanding senior season while leading Amherst (VA) to a 14-0 record and its second consecutive state championship title, earning AP Group AA Player of the Year honors. The 6-1, 180-pound Rose, a quarterback and safety for head coach Scott Abell, threw for 1,133 yards and 13 touchdowns and rushed for 1,790 yards and 27 scores.

Winning the state title in 2006 was special, but the second title meant more to the Virginia Tech commitment.

“I think definitely the repeat, for my team and for me personally, meant more,” said Rose, who rushed for 249 yards and three scores in Amherst’s state championship win over Sherando. “Being a senior and ending the season like we did was just great. We had more of an expectation to win this year. The pressure was on us. I liked it, but at the same time we had to play 100 percent every game. We got 100 percent from everyone…the crowd, the sidelines, the players, the coaches. We were all one big unit.”

Rose’s senior season performance caught the attention of many, including new Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson. Johnson, who actually had offered a scholarship to Rose and badly wanted him while at Navy, tried recently to convince the Amherst star to make an official visit to Atlanta. He was unsuccessful.
