Hokies Finish Ranked in Top Ten

Virginia Tech finished #9 in both the AP Poll and the USA Today Coaches’ Poll
released this morning. The Hokies finished the season 11-3 overall following
their Orange Bowl loss to the Kansas Jayhawks. LSU finished #1 following their
dismantling of Ohio State in last night’s BCS National Championship Game.

It is the third time in the last four seasons that the Hokies have finished
in the top 10 in both polls. That clearly establishes Virginia Tech as the top
football program in the ACC. Two other ACC teams finished in the Top 25 this
year. Boston College was #10 by the AP and #11 by the Coaches, while Clemson was
#21 in the AP and #22 in the Coaches.

The Hokies finished #10 in both polls following the 2004 season, and #7 after
the 2005 season.

The following table lists the number of teams in each conference that were
ranked in at least one of the two final polls.

The SEC, Big 12 and Big 10 were the dominant conferences in the final polls. The
Big 12 had four teams (Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas) in the Top 10.
Although it wasn’t a deep conference, the Big 12 had a high number of excellent
teams this year. Three of those four teams won their bowl game. The Big East
brings up the rear, with only West Virginia and Cincinnati ranked.
