Hokie Men’s Soccer Makes NCAA Final Eight

The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team is still alive in the NCAA Men’s Soccer
Championship. The Hokies knocked off Old Dominion 1-0 on Sunday, and will
advance to the NCAA quarterfinals against UConn. They are one of just eight
teams with a chance to win the National Championship. Tech is sporting a 13-3-5
overall record, with two of their three losses coming to Boston College, who has
already been eliminated.

The Hokies were the #11 overall seed of the tournament and earned a first
round bye. They hosted California in Blacksburg in the second round and came
away with a 3-2 win. Their third round match was in Blacksburg yet again, this
time against ODU, whom Tech had never beaten. The Hokies prevailed 1-0.

The next round will get a lot tougher, as the Hokies travel to Storrs, CT to
take on the #3 seed UConn Huskies. This will be Tech’s first road match of the
NCAA tournament. If they win, the advance to the NCAA semifinals in Cary, NC.
The Hokies’ game with UConn will be held on December 8 at 1pm.

On Virginia Tech’s side of the bracket, all four teams are seeded and
received first round byes. The winner of #3 UConn and #11 VT will face the
winner of #10 Notre Dame and #2 Wake Forest. The Hokies have a tough road to
reach the finals.

On the other side of the bracket, three of the four remaining teams are
unseeded. UMass, Illinois-Chicago and Bradley all had to play first round games.
#5 Ohio State is the favorite to win their bracket and advance to the finals.
They’ll face Bradley, and the winner of that game will face the winner of UMass
and Illinois-Chicago.

The semifinals and the finals will be held at SAS Soccer Park in Cary, NC.
The semifinals will be on December 14, and the finals will be on December 16 at
3pm. The finals will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
