Class of ’09 Preview: Western Branch Bruins

There is no doubt that one of the top junior prospects in the state is Western Branch (Chesapeake) star Kevin Newsome . It’s been a little over two weeks since junior prospects could begin to receive “recruiting materials” such as letters and written offers from Division 1A college coaches and Division 1A coaches from all across the country have contacted Western Branch head coach Scott Johnson about his signal caller.

“I’ve gotten calls for Kevin from most of the big schools,” said Johnson. “I faxed out a transcript to Stanford. Southern Cal sent some information and would like a tape. His name is definitely out there. Everybody from in the state has been in contact. With Virginia Tech, I know Kevin has been on their radar since his sophomore year. He does have official offers, but I’m not sure which ones exactly. I know Tech has offered. I know Penn State likes him.”

Several things stand out about Newsome, who is in his second season as the Bruins starting signal caller. First of all, he is a threat to run and to pass, making him an outstanding fit for Coach Johnson’s spread offense. In three games this season, Newsome has helped the Bruins compile close to 1,200 yards of total offense.

“Kevin is the best of both worlds. Some quarterbacks are runners and some are throwers. He can do both,” said Johnson, who is in his first season as head coach after serving as defensive coordinator under Lew Johnston.
