Hokies Ranked 9th in AP Poll

The Associated Press preseason college football rankings were released on Saturday afternoon, and the Hokies are ranked ninth, the same ranking they received from the coaches two weeks ago.

The AP and USA Today Coaches’ Top 25 rankings are very similar, with a couple of exceptions. In the similarity department, USC and LSU hold down the #1 and #2 rankings in both polls. The top nine in both polls are identical, with one odd exception: Florida and West Virginia occupy spots 3 and 6 in both polls, but are flip-flopped. In the USA Today poll from two weeks ago, Florida is #3 and WVU is #6; in the AP, WVU is #3 and the Gators are #6.

In both polls, #4 and #5 are Texas and Michigan; #7, #8, and #9 are Wisconsin, Oklahoma, and Virginia Tech.

Just as with the USA Today Poll, only two ACC teams are ranked in the initial AP Poll. Florida State is #19 (#21 in the USA Today Poll). In the “Others Receiving Votes” category of the AP Poll, ACC teams listed are Georgia Tech (#27), Boston College (#28), Miami (#31), Wake Forest (#34), Virginia (#40), Clemson (#41), and NC State (#44-tie). The only ACC teams not receiving votes in the AP Poll are Duke, UNC, and Maryland.
