Status Update on 2007 Football Recruiting Class

Virginia Tech’s second summer session began this past Monday, and 17 members
of the 2007 recruiting class reported to Blacksburg. They join Josh Oglesby,
also a member of the 2007 recruiting class, who enrolled in January. Several
other members of the class will enroll at later dates.

First, here’s the list of players who reported to Blacksburg earlier in the
week.

Most of those players are expected to redshirt, although the offensive linemen
will be given a strong look when practice begins in August. Reports indicate
that Brooks, Latif and DeChristopher all reported in great shape, which is a
welcome change when you consider the condition that some of Tech’s OL recruits
reported in during past seasons.

Other members of the class of 2007 have not reported yet, and the status of
some others are still up in the air.

Long snapper/offensive lineman Colin Carroll will report to school when practice
begins in August. He is fully qualified, but did not join the team for the
second summer session.

The status of offensive line recruit William Alvarez is up in the air.
Alvarez is waiting on word from the NCAA Clearinghouse on whether or not he has
qualified. If he qualifies, it is assumed that he’ll join the team for preseason
practice in August. If he does not, he’ll head to prep school and join the team
in January 2008 at the earliest.

Linebacker recruit Quillie Odom will be heading to Hargrave Military Academy
this fall. He plans to head to Virginia Tech in January 2008, where he would get
a spring practice under his belt and still be a true freshman next season, with
the option to redshirt. Defensive tackle Courtney Prince will also enroll in
January 2008.

Linebacker Alonzo Tweedy, athlete Kendrick Pressley and running back D.J.
Thomas will not enroll this year. It is unknown when they will arrive at Tech,
although their official status is stated as "January (2008) at the
earliest," according to the Roanoke Times. Thomas told TechSideline.com in
April that he planned on attending Fork Union Military Academy this fall and
would like to enroll at Tech in January.

The entire team will have reported to campus by August 2. Preseason practice
begins the next day, on Friday, August 3.
