First Colonial (Virginia Beach, VA) running back Tony Gregory had wanted to make official visits before making a commitment anywhere. That was his thinking when his recruitment first started picking up steam. But as his first visit to Virginia Tech came closer, he acknowledged there was a chance he could commit sooner. He did so, choosing the Hokies the Thursday following Tech’s June 9th senior camp.

“I took my mom up there,” Gregory recalled. “She talked to Coach Beamer. She liked what they had to offer me. Coach Beamer answered all my mom’s questions. She loved it. I loved it. We went home, talked to my dad about it, and then I committed.”

He detailed the moments when he informed the Tech staff of his decision.

“I told my coach, so he already knew,” Gregory recalled of making the commitment. “He got Coach Newsome on the phone. I told him I wanted to commit. He was overjoyed. He said it was great and he couldn’t wait to get me up there. He said I made his day. A few days later, I talked to Coach Beamer. He said he was overjoyed.”
