2008 Class: Amherst’s McCoy Close to First Offer

6-3, 210-pound WR/ATH Derrick McCoy, a star junior prospect for Amherst County (VA), is close to receiving his first official scholarship offer according to Amherst Head Coach Scott Abell. And the one offer could just be the tip of the iceberg for McCoy, who has been a starter on the varsity level since his freshman season.

Its really starting to take off, Abell said of McCoys recruitment. Virginia Tech has verbally indicated that they have a scholarship coming. UVa has been down here a ton of times. I think UVa is going to wait until they get through signing this class before they go ahead with anything. Maryland just got his junior tape. Other schools like N.C. State and UNC – are just now getting tape on him. I really think hell get offers from all of those programs.

In his junior season, McCoy started at wide receiver and outside linebacker. He racked up close to 800 yards on offense, averaging around 30 yards per catch in a run-oriented offense. He had nine touchdowns.

This past season was McCoys first as a starter on defense. He did well, finishing with seven sacks, two interceptions and numerous tackles-for-loss, said Coach Abell. It was McCoys performance on defense that has Abell believing many offers will come.
