Phoebus Standout Lists Two on Top

Phoebus (Hampton, VA) offensive line standout Maurice Hampton puts two schools at the top of his list right now. Both programs are from the ACC, with one being in the state of Virginia and the other from outside the state. The 6-3, 275-pound Hampton lists his favorites and discusses why they are on top.

“I’ve been talking to Maryland and Coach Bratton, and Coach Cav from Virginia Tech of course. Those are the two schools on top of my list right now,” said Hampton, who boasts scholarship offers from each of those two programs. “I would say they are pretty even right now.

“Both of those schools are recruiting me the hardest. For Virginia Tech, one thing is that I have Phoebus family there already. It is a nice little atmosphere I could probably adjust quicker to. Matt Wright, Elan Lewis, Xavier Adibi…they are all there. They can help me out. The fact that I would be playing football is another thing. Virginia Tech is a great program.

“Maryland is almost the same thing, except I don’t have anybody over there that I know already. I am getting so much encouragement from their coach, though. He tells me they really need linemen. He says I could probably play next fall and that I wouldn’t red-shirt. But, personally, I would rather red-shirt first.”

In addition to offers from his two favorites, Hampton claims offers from North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. He says he receives mail from these schools, among others. Hampton is concentrating right now on his senior season, but he does have a timetable for when he would like to make official visits.

“I’m supposed to visit these schools around December,” Hampton said. “There are no set dates, but the month itself is pretty much a set time period. That’s when my family and I can make those visits.”

As for his senior season, Hampton, who plays offensive guard and defensive tackle for Bill Dee, played the entire game on offense while seeing little time on defense in Phoebus’ 35-0 win over Gloucester last Friday. The Phantoms (7-1) rebounded nicely from a 35-10 loss to arch-rival Hampton the previous week.

“It was a nice start for our team,” Hampton said of the win over Gloucester. “We switched around some people so nobody is tired. We all gave 110-percent and that is what we will do for the rest of the year. I think we are going to have a fantastic end to the year.”

Major

A very good student, Hampton is currently taking AP courses at Phoebus. In college, he already knows where his interests lie.

“I like Engineering and Design,” Hampton said. “I love to draw. Just give me something and I’ll draw it. I can do that all day. I’m also interested in Physical Education. I’m taking a Human Anatomy course and that has kept my interest.”
