Hermitage High School defensive end Jeffrey Fitzgerald stated last week that he had trimmed his list to Virginia, Virginia Tech and Maryland. Yesterday, he made his decision and committed to the University of Virginia.

“Jeffrey has committed to UVA,” Hermitage Head Coach Patrick Kane said, via e-mail this morning.

Ranked as the #6 prospect in the state, Fitzgerald becomes the 11th in-state recruit to commit to UVa for the 2005 class. Overall, he is the 21st commitment in Virginia’s 2005 class.

As a junior last season, the 6-4, 250-pound prospect earned 1st-team all-district, 1st-team all-region and 2nd-team all-state honors at the defensive end position. He finished the 2003 season with 49 tackles including 6 tackles-for-loss and 5 sacks. Offensively, Fitzgerald made 12 catches for 229 yards and 3 touchdowns from the tight end position. He was recruited as a defensive end for Virginia.
