Bath County High School’s (VA) John Phillips , who is one of the top tight end prospects in the state of Virginia, verbally committed to Virginia today. The 6-6, 240 pound prospect chose the ‘Hoos over an offer from Virginia Tech and heavy interest from UNC.

“I’ve been thinking about this for a long time,” Phillips said. “UVa has shown the most interest in me. They were the first to offer. I really like the coaching staff, and when I went up to practice today they answered all of the questions I had. The school is great, and it’s close to my brother [Jacob, who will attend William & Mary] and my family. Everything just felt right about UVa, so I went ahead and committed.”

As a junior, Phillips finished with 25 catches for 495 yards and six touchdowns. He played tight end and defensive end, earning Group A coaches second-team All-State honors for both positions. According to Phillips, UVa is recruiting him as a tight end.

At the end of his junior season, Phillips suffered a knee injury where he tore two ligaments. He says the injury is recovering well. When healthy, his combination of size, speed (4.75 in the 40), and hands make him an excellent tight end prospect on the next level.
