Earlier this week, Virginia received commitment number two for the 2005 recruiting class. Southern Durham (Durham, NC) wide receiver/outside linebacker Maurice Covington chose the Cavaliers over interest from many ACC and SEC programs.

Southern Durham Head Coach Gordon Walters, who coached current Virginia sophomore safety Willie Davis at Lanier High School (NC), says Covington really enjoyed a visit last month to Virginia and felt ready to make an early commitment.

“Maurice went up there, he hung out with Willie Davis and liked it a lot,” said Walters. “He was really impressed with the staff and he’s impressed with what they offer academically. I met with his mother and father, and we went over the pros and cons of committing early. They talked about it and Maurice came into my office the other day and said he was ready to commit. I’m not going to let anyone else talk to him because he is committed to Virginia.”

Covington chose Virginia over Georgia Tech and North Carolina.
