In late June of 2003, Scott Deke finally got what he wanted. Following an impressive performance during the University of Virginia’s summer camp, he received a scholarship offer from Coach Groh. He verbally committed shortly thereafter – Virginia receiving a promising quarterback prospect and Deke heading to his number one school of choice.

Almost one month after the fact, the Loyola (Los Angeles, CA) High School signal caller is still excited about his decision.

“I’m really excited,” said the 6-2, 200 pound Deke of his decision. “I knew I wanted to go there pretty much straight off the bat. I couldn’t find a place with the combination of everything I wanted like UVA had. They are one of the top academic institutions in the country. And with the campus as beautiful as it is, it’s just perfect. Ever since I stepped on the campus I knew I wanted to go there.”

Deke initiated the contact between himself and Virginia by sending the coaching staff his highlight tape. The Cavalier coaches then began actively recruiting him. Quarterbacks coach Mike Groh stayed in touch on a consistent basis up until the summer camp.
