QB Courtney Denson Commits to VT (6/1/02)

The Hokies received a surprise commitment when Miami Glade Central quarterback Courtney Denson verbaled to Tech on Saturday. The verbal was reported by Doug Doughty of The Roanoke Times, and it caught those who follow Hokie recruiting off-guard, because they did not have Denson on their recruiting lists.

Denson is a dual-threat QB who, as a junior last season, passed for 2,000 yards and ran for nearly 400 yards. Denson is in good shape academically, with a 2.8 GPA and 1,160 on the SAT.

Denson was called “one of South Florida’s best – if not the top-rated quarterback prospect” by FloridaKids.net. Sources say he also had offers from Florida State, Clemson, Auburn, NC State, Florida, and Northwestern. He reportedly selected Tech partly because he is a Michael Vick fan, and he “didn’t want to pass up” the Virginia Tech offer.

Denson is Tech’s third verbal of the 2003 recruiting class, joining Centreville offensive lineman Matt Welsh and Magna Vista defensive lineman Kory Robertson.
