Roland Minor, a 6-1, 190-pound wide receiver/defensive back prospect from Woodson High School in Washington D.C., has verbally committed to Virginia Tech.
Minor was not necessarily the player Hokie fans expected to be their 13th verbal commitment. In fact, it wasn’t until recently that the Tech coaches extended a scholarship offer to Minor, who made his commitment yesterday, less than two weeks after receiving the offer.
Despite the lack of recognition in the recruiting ranks, it appears the Hokies found themselves a stud of a player. For one thing, Minor is fast … real fast. According to Woodson High School Head Coach Greg Fuller, Minor ran a 4.2 forty at the Washington D.C area combine this summer. His time was matched only by All-American tight end prospect Vernon Davis of Dunbar.
The 40 time was no fluke.
“He [Minor] usually runs around a 4.3,” said Fuller.
But there is more. Not only does Minor possess blazing speed, but he is tough and has a great knowledge of the game. His attributes helped him earn first-team All-DC I-AA as a junior at the wide receiver position. So far this season, he has been able to continue his success.
“So far this year, Roland has made 15 receptions for 288 yards and three touchdowns,” said Fuller. “On defense, he has one interception on the year. We mostly play him on the offensive end.”
While he is an impressive wide receiver who, according to Fuller, is also the best blocker on the team, Minor is being recruited to play defensive back for the Hokies. He possesses all the skills to turn into a great collegiate cornerback.
“Defensively, it’s his tenacity, aggressiveness, and attacking style [that make him good]”, said Fuller. “He is also a very good tackler and has a great sense for football.”
Virginia Tech Receivers Coach Tony Ball was the lead recruiter for Minor, who has already qualified academically for freshman eligibility. He chose the Hokies over offers from Penn State and Temple. Even though he has committed to Tech, he will take all of his official visits, according to Fuller.
