John Szefc Completes Staff by Hiring Kurt Elbin

Virginia Tech baseball coach John Szefc completed his new staff on Friday when the athletic department announced that Kurt Elbin has left VCU to become an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Hokies.

“He’s very good at developing young position players and he absolutely knows the state of Virginia when it comes to recruiting,” Szefc said in a press release. “For those reasons, and many others, he is a very good fit here as we build this program here in Blacksburg.”

Elbin helped the Rams attain some degree of national prominence during his tenure as an assistant.  VCU advanced to Super Regionals in 2015.  He will work with Virginia Tech’s position players both in the field and at the plate, and he will coordinate Tech’s recruiting efforts.

“First, I’d like to thank Mr. (Whit) Babcock, the Virginia Tech administration and Coach Szefc for giving me this opportunity to not only join the baseball program but the family here in Blacksburg and Virginia Tech,” Elbin said. “This is obviously a special place and I am excited to get started and to move forward with the baseball program and work in the ACC.”

  1. Very easy to get excited about what is going on at Virginia Tech in all sports areas !!!

  2. Looks like Chef has put together a team that addresses all the principal parts of a good program: coaching, recruiting, familiarity with the area and its recruiting base, and coaching a “cold weather” program. I look forward to watching the program grow.
    GO HOKIE 9 !!!!
