Hokie Wrestlers Finish 6th at NCAA Wrestling Championships

The NCAA Wrestling Championships concluded over the weekend, and Virginia Tech came in sixth nationally, while five wrestlers achieved All-American status.

1. Penn State: 146.5
2. Ohio State: 110
3. Oklahoma State: 103
4. Iowa: 97
5. Missouri: 86.5
6. Virginia Tech: 63.5

The #6 finish is Tech’s fifth straight top-ten finish, but it doesn’t quite match last year’s fourth-place finish.

The Hokies had five wrestlers achieve All-American status (top eight in their weight class):

  • 125 pounds: Joey Dance, 5th place
  • 149 pounds: Solomon Chishko, 6th place
  • 157 pounds: Sal Mastriani, 8th place
  • 197 pounds: Jared Haught, 4th place
  • 285 pounds: Ty Walz, 4th place

Dance, Mastriani, and Walz were all seniors. Chishko is a redshirt sophomore, and  Haught is a redshirt junior. The Hokies will also return two other wrestlers who competed at the NCAA Wrestling Championships, but didn’t achieve All-American status:  redshirt sophomore Zack Zavatsky (184 pounds) and redshirt junior Zach Epperly (174 pounds).

  1. FINALLY!!
VT Sideline finally writes an article on the most consistent & successful sport VT now offers – WOW – WNIT and Baseball articles galore – but days to mention a 6th Place Finish in the Country – Very disappointed in your coverage TS

      1. Thanks for the coverage, without TSL we would get very little up to date information on what is happening with VT Wrestling.

  2. Four returning AA’s if we’re including last year’s results – Chishko, McFadden, Epperly, and Haught.

  3. Hi Will….the only thing I might add is that Zach Epperly was an AA last year (3rd) and the year before (7th) so technically we are returning 3 AA’s to the line-up next year (provided they stick around). His not making AA status this year was a bummer because he had the chance to become VT’s only 4x AA, had he done so this year and next.

And we had 2x semi-finalist this year in Haught and Walz. Walz lost by one point to miss the finals. Lost to Wisconsin’s C. Medberry 4-3. Haught lost 6-2 to Missouri’s J. Cox

    1. I apologize for missing McFadden’s 6th place last year. Technically returning 4 AAs: 2 from this year and 2 from previous years.

    2. Thanks for clearing that up about Epperly. I thought he was. Shame he missed out this year.
