He’s heard it more times than he’d like to admit. Immanuel Hickman, a junior at Matoaca High School in Chesterfield, Va., has heard more than one person have trouble pronouncing the name of his school, and that doesn’t help when you’re looking for recognition.

But Hickman, who has dropped a considerable amount of weight, has put himself more and more on schools’ radars. He’s yet to receive a scholarship offer, but Virginia Tech, Virginia, Rutgers and North Carolina are among those showing interest, and Rivals ranks him as the No. 11 player in Virginia for the 2019 class.

Hickman was on hand for the Hokies’ win over Delaware and has more visits coming. All the while, he’s trying to get himself as much attention from schools as he can.

“Being from Virginia and Matoaca, the butchering the name, it’s sad,” Hickman said. “But it’s one of those things, when I honestly do make it to that level, its mind blowing. When we do make it, it’s going to be to the point I can honestly say, I worked for this. We only had like five students go to college and play football and they were all Division III schools and JUCO.”
