TSL Roundtable: The Max Warner hire

Virginia Tech recently hired Max Warner as an Offensive Quality Control coach, according to reports.  He served as the QB coach and offensive coordinator to QB signee Dwayne Lawson.  What is your opinion of this hire?

Upwind of uva: Mine is a response of three parts: the appearance, the reality, and the implications.

On the surface this has all the appearances of a quid pro quo deal, and I’ll admit that this type of arrangement looks (and can be) slimy. However, Frank Beamer may want to right the ship and go out a winner, but I strongly doubt he’d risk tarnishing a nearly sterling reputation built over three decades for a single player? I don’t, and even the suggestion lacks respect for the values Beamer has built the program around. Criticize the coach all you want for anemic offenses, bad hires, giving troubled players too many chances and even puckering up during big games, but to question his ethics is simply unfounded. We may not be pearly white, but we’re damn close.

The reality is that VT (including Frank and Whit) recognizes that today’s major college football includes these extra coaching positions – and make no mistake, they are coaches in everything except name. When the SEC led the charge in creating these new support positions, you either add them or appear in comparison rinky-dink to recruits, their coaches and parents. If you don’t have them, you won’t compete.
