How close are the Hokies?

On some days, you almost beat future #1 seeds like UVA and Duke and you think you are really close to being good.  On other days, you get bombed by Clemson and Miami, or lose to Appalachian State, and it looks like you’ve got a long, arduous road ahead.  The reality lies somewhere in between.

Virginia Tech played a helluva basketball game against a really good team on Wednesday night.  They ultimately fell short, but I think everybody who watched the game could see that Buzz Williams went toe-to-toe with Coach K in a well-coached game, as he did with Tony Bennett earlier this year.  The crowd left Cassell Coliseum feeling better about the program than they did when they entered the building a few hours earlier.  Even some Duke fans gave the Tech team a round of applause as they left the court, and one Duke basketball reporter was sufficiently impressed by the Hokies to Tweet this…

Buzz Williams has two different basketball teams right now.  The one that plays at home, and the one that plays on the road.  Tech’s two ACC wins have come in Cassell Coliseum, including one over possible NCAA Tournament participant Pitt.  All but one of their home losses have been very close as well.
