Virginia Tech Gets Commitment From In-State LB Rayshard Ashby

Three-star linebacker prospect Rayshard Ashby kept Virginia Tech’s recruit momentum going when he announced this afternoon that he has committed to the Hokies.

Ashby, a 6’0″, 215-pound junior out of perennial Chesterfield (VA) power L.C. Bird, also held offers from East Carolina, Marshall, Maryland, Syracuse, and West Virginia before choosing Virginia Tech. He becomes the third class of 2017 recruit to commit to head coach Justin Fuente in as many days. The Hokies now have five commitments in total in the class of 2017.

Ashby helped the Skyhawks to state championships in 2013 and 2104. He earned VHSCA 5A first-team all-state and 5A South Region Defensive Player of the Year honors as a junior in the 2015 season, when he helped Bird to an 11-1 overall record that included an undefeated regular season.

Virginia Tech’s class of 2017 commitment list now looks like this…

Hendon Hooker, QB, Dudley (Greensboro, N.C.)
TyJuan Garbutt, DE, Riverbend (Fredericksburg, VA)
Rayshard Ashby, LB, LC Bird (Chesterfield, VA)
Aundre Kearney, LB, Mandarin (FL)
Devante Smith, DB, Stonewall Jackson (Manassas, VA)

Ashby, whose highlights you can see below, is the third L.C. Bird product to commit to Virginia Tech since the class of 2012. The Hokies signed linebacker Deon Clarke in 2012 and inked defensive back Shawn Payne in 2014. Clarke was a senior this past season. Payne left the program last August but is now back on the roster.

  1. Glad to see some LB’s in this class already.

BTW, isn’t Payne back with the team this spring?
