Virginia Tech men’s basketball student-athlete Ahmed Hill underwent successful surgery on his left leg on Tuesday afternoon, August 11. The surgery was performed by Dr. Tony McPherron at LewisGale Montgomery Hospital.

Hill, a rising sophomore from Augusta, Georgia, suffered a partial tear to the patella tendon in his left leg during individual workouts earlier this month. Following further evaluations, it was decided that surgery would be needed. No timetable has been set for his return to the court, but he is expected to miss all preseason conditioning activities.

Hill appeared in all 33 games as a freshman for the Hokies in the 2014-15 season, making a team-high 30 starts. He averaged 8.7 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.

  1. Not too worried about the VT jinx here as this could actually be a blessing in disguise. If he can recover and contribute during the ACC schedule then he may have a bit more in the tank down the stretch having missed the first month or two of the season. It will certainly take some time to get back into game shape but he could be peaking towards the end of the season when others may be wearing down.

If he can’t make a recovery to contribute this year then he has the opportunity to redshirt and space out some of the recruiting efforts. Sure, it has an impact this year but VT should be focused on a tourney run in 2017 after a solid season in 2015-2016. If they get ahead of schedule and are contending for the NCAA tourney this year then all the better!

  2. Having suffered from a complete patella tendon tear, I can say he can be back 100% in 4 to 6 months. It’s bad but knee is stable. I think it’s better than ACL/MCL. Took me a year, but I did not have the support he will have.

  3. That type of surgery probably requires 6 months for a full recovery “if” all goes well. It may take as long as 12 months. Looks like Hill may get a medical redshirt. I can’t see him being ready no earlier than early February unless the partial tear was detected very early. We can only hope for the best.

  4. Of all the positions to lose a player to an injury, Wing was the one, just hope the bigs can stay healthy. Maybe this will help Buzz clear up his Wing rotation, at least early in the season until Hill can get back up to speed.

      1. The first time you sit out a season due to injury it’s just a regular redshirt.

If he misses a 2nd season to injury he could apply for a medical redshirt.
