Beamer PC Transcript: Miami week

  • Opening statement…
  • I think a very capable, very good Miami team. Talented. They coach ‘em up. Very athletic, they got Duke Johnson, who didn’t play against us last year, but is a special player. Very good speed, as you could imagine. And I think their defense, I think they’re like 24th in the country I think it is. So it’s another challenging game.
  • On offensive line shuffles (Wang to center, Teller to left guard)…
  • Well we just had some foul ups in there on the snap. I think Wang is a little more consistent in snapping the ball. But you know, Caleb is a good player, but we have to get the snap right. I think Wyatt looks the part. He’s tough. He doesn’t only try to block you, he tries to bury you. I like that toughness in there, a lot.
  • Update on Marshawn Williams (ankle)…
  • He’s doing well. I’m not sure he’s going to play, but it’s looking better all the time, I’ll say that.
  • abbey.jpgUpdate on Chase Williams (knee)…
  • He’s getting better, but I think he’s doubtful for this week.
  • On alleged play clock issues at end of half…
  • I was going on what some people were telling me, but you know I need to stay out of the clock business. It’s in very capable hands. We need to look down at the 40 or the 25 second clock and know how much time we’ve got left. Michael thought he was right on schedule and there wasn’t a need to know what the time was, but we’ll learn from that. We’ll be better.
  • On Joshua Stanford’s return to the depth chart…
  • He went down to the scout team, and then he spent a lot of time with coach (Mike) Gentry here. A couple guys got nicked up, Isaiah Ford and Phillips. It gave him an opportunity to get back in there and work a little bit.
  • On importance of Miami game…
  • I think we have a great respect for Miami and the type of program it is and the type of athletes they have on the team and how good they’ve been over the years. I think out of respect, I think that probably helps us play well against them. I think that’s kind of the situation there.
  • On why three of the opponents’ top rushing attacks against have been by quarterbacks…
  • I think when you look at it a quarterback a lot of times is ‘who do you have around you?’ When you have good wide receivers, a great running back – I’m talking about the last ballgame – that opens up trying to cover everything. We let the guy out of there and he runs well enough. So, that was the situation there. We’ve had our deal with athletic quarterbacks. Any time you can get one you need to get them, because I do think that’s a great equalizer. You put some good people around them and you really got what you want going. A freshman quarterback with Miami, haven’t seen many of those play for Miami. I think this kid is a special kid.
  • On if he is worried about it being the first home night game for many players…
  • I’d say I’d rather try to slow them down than speed them up. I don’t think that will be a problem. I hope our fans will be here and be ready to roll, because usually a Thursday night game in Blacksburg is a special situation. So I’m hopeful it will be this year.
  • On Thursday night not being a sell out…
  • I’ve said all along, our fans help us win and we need their help Thursday night.
  • On Miami’s defense, and Michael Brewer saying they are disruptive…
  • Disruptive. I second that. They’re athletic, look at them. Everyone can run, you get guys chasing the ball and guys in the secondary that are fast. I think they are a very, very good football team, a very talented football team.

  1. Would love to be there. Sorry that I am 175 miles away. Just can’t handle that 350 roundtrip for a night game.

  2. Agree. VT fans have slacked off even in the last few years of the 10 win era you could tell.

  3. It is a shame that we can’t sell out for Thursday. All the complaining last year about not having a home Thursday game and then Whit gets one scheduled with an attractive opponent(and look what happens). I know our young team is banged up, short-handed, and inconsistent, but they need support now more than ever.
