Ten Years of Top Ten Opponents

OXVT, who clearly has a lot of time on his hands, brings us the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of VT’s clashes with top ten opponents since entering the ACC.

This springs out of one of OXVT’s infographics that he produced early this week on his OX_VT Twitter account — click the graphic below for the full-size version.

There’s a story behind every game, and OXVT broke each one of those games into the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

As we look forward to the match-up with top-ten Ohio State (ranked #5 and #6 in the two major polls), it’s worth looking back at the 15 games included in OXVT’s infographic above.


2004 – USC 24, VT 13

The Good:
Yardage Margin deficit of 79, respectable against #1 USC
Bryan Randall – 82 yards rushing (4.82 YPC)
TOP edge 31:31 to 28:29
Solid Defensive effort – Holding USC to 76 yards below their season avg (449) – however…

The Bad:
Xavier Adibi bicep injury further opening the door for ….
The Big Play – Reggie Bush TD catches of 35, 53 & 29 yards
Hamilton/Humes combined 59 yards on 17 carries (3.47 YPC)

The Ugly:
Very questionable pass interference call on Josh Hyman negating a 32-yd gain to USC’s 12 yard line with VT up 10-7.


2004 – VT 19, WVU 13

The Good:
192 rushing yards – 115 by Mike Imoh – 70 by Bryan Randall
TOP edge 35:52 to 24:08
Held WVU to 0-13 on 3rd down conversions and 247 total yards
74 yard blocked FG return for TD

The Bad:
7 of 19 on 3rd down conversions (37%)
0-4 on Red Zone TD Chances
14 penalties for 132 yards

The Ugly:
34 yard INT return for TD by WVU


2004 – VT 16, Miami 10

The Amazing:
Randall to Royal 39 yard TD resulting in ACC Championship!

The Good:
2-2 in Red Zone Scoring Chances (1 TD, 1 FG)
Held Miami to 1-12 on 3rd down conversions and 190 total yards
TOP 34:30 to 25:30
INT by Green resulting in 10 play, 80 yard TD drive

The Bad:
3 of 13 on 3rd down conversions (23%)
5 Sacks allowed for 37 yards lost
297 yards of total offense

The Ugly:
Blocked Extra Point attempt after Royal TD


2004 – Auburn 16, VT 13

The Good:
Held the Auburn offense (Jason Campbell, Ronnie Brown, Cadillac Williams) to 299 total yards
Bryan Randall – 299 yards passing – 2 TD’s
Josh Morgan – 3 Catches, 126 yards, 2 TD’s

The Bad:
Brandon Pace Missed 23 yard FG
3 of 12 on 3rd down conversions (25%)
Imoh/Humes – 26 yards rushing on 12 attempts (2.16 YPC)

The Ugly:
Dropped TD pass on 4th and 1 by Jesse Allen


2005 – Miami 27, VT 7

The Good:
Aaron Rouse – 13 tackles (4 solo, 9 ast)
Forgot about the disaster and stomped UVA 52-14 the next game
Tremendous ESPN entrance

2006 – VT 24, Clemson 7

The Good:
Held Clemson Offense (James Davis, CJ Spiller a combined 3.22 YPC) to 166 Total Yards
Brandon Ore – 203 Rushing Yards
TOP 35:50 to 24:10
4-4 in Red Zone Scoring Chances (3 TDs, 1 FG)

The Bad:
6 of 18 on 3rd down conversions (33%)
Sean Glennon fumble on own 31 three minutes before halftime – did not lead to points, however

The Ugly:
Not much – Perfect example of a Thursday night Lane beat down


2007 – LSU 48, VT 7 (The Woodshed)

The Good:
VT won the coin toss
Introduced Tyrod Taylor to the college football world (however, burning his redshirt)

The Bad:
149 total yards of Offense
2 of 14 on 3rd down conversions (14%)
31% (9-29) completion %

The Ugly:
Defense blitzed for 598 total yards by LSU
Worst loss ever for Frank Beamer at VT


2007 – BC 14, VT 10

The Good:
Held Matt Ryan and crew to 4 of 16 on 3rd down conversions (25%)
Held Ryan to a 48% completion % (25/52)
Possession edge over BC 31:49 to 28:11
Receiving a gratuitous replay ruling on Eddie Royal’s 8 yard TD catch

The Bad:
Fumbling the ball 5 times, losing 2
265 total yards on offense

The Ugly:
Surrendering 14 points to Matty Ice in the final 2:11 of the game
Jeff Jagodzinski’s stupid victory dance


2007 – Kansas 24, VT 21

The Good:
Holding a really good Kansas offense to 344 yards and 6 of 17 on 3rd downs (35%)
Turning 2 of 3 Red Zone chances into Touchdowns
Justin Harper 84 yard punt return TD

The Bad:
2 Missed FG attempts (48, 25(blocked))
5 sacks – 3 of them taking VT out of FG range
Abandoning the run game in many situations in favor of the pass when Branden Ore could’ve run it down their throats all night

The Ugly:
17 Kansas points were the result of Taylor/Glennon INTs


2009 – Alabama 34, VT 24

The Good:
Limiting Bama to 6 of 17 on 3rd down conversions (35%)
Brent Bowden – 45.6 yards per punt
98 yard KO return td by Dyrell Roberts

Ryan Williams 71 yards on 13 carries w/ 2 TDs – including a 32yd scamper

The Bad:
Alabama TOP 37:02 to 22:58 edge
2 of 12 on 3rd down conversions (17%)
Defense ravaged for 498 yds of Total Alabama offense
5 fumbles – 2 lost

The Ugly:
155 yards of Total offense (91 passing, 64 rushing)


2009 – VT 31, Miami 7

The Good:
Dominated Miami O – Holding them to 209 yards and 1 of 11 on 3rd down conversions
272 yards rushing – 150 by Ryan Williams (2 TDs) – 75 by Tyrod Taylor
TOP 33:20 to 26:40 edge
Cody Grimm – 11 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss
1 yd Blocked Punt Return for TD (2:23 mark of video)

The Bad:
5 of 14 on 3rd down conversions (36%) and 0 of 2 on 4th down

The Ugly:

2010 – Boise State 33, VT 30

The Good:
Tyrod Taylor – 15 of 22 for 186 yds (2 TDs) – 73 yards rushing
TOP 34:20 to 25:40 edge
4 of 5 in Red Zone opportunities (3 TDs, 1 FG)
Held Kellen Moore and crew to 6 of 15 on 3rd down conversions (40%)

The Bad:
Ryan Williams just 40 yards on 20 carries (2 YPC)
Missed 34yd FG attempt
4 of 12 (33%) on 3rd down conversions
End of game play calling down by three with 1:09 left and 2 timeouts (needed about 40 yards for FG range and tie, yet went for the home run)

The Ugly:
Poor Special Teams play early (Boise State blocked punt, kickoff out of bounds, roughing the punter) led to early 17-0 deficit


2010 – Stanford 40, VT 12

The Good:
Only trailed 13-12 at the half thanks to a defense that limited Stanford to 37 yards on 6 of their 8 drives and added a safety
TOP 32:14 to 27:46 edge
Danny Coale and Jarrett Boykin a combined 176 yards receiving on 12 catches
David Wilson’s ridiculous 12 yard TD catch after Tyrod Taylor’s ability to stay alive

The Bad:
Dropped INT by Jayron Hosley which likely would’ve resulted in TD return
Defense torched in 2nd half and gave up 534 yards overall (4 TD passes by Luck)
Tyrod Taylor sacked 8 times for 70 yards
11 TFL by Stanford

The Ugly:
66 yards on 34 rushing attempts (1.9 YPC)


2012 – FSU 28, VT 22

The Amazing:
Held FSU’s ground attack to -15 yards on 25 rushing attempts (-0.6 YPC)

The Good:
Logan Thomas – 298 yards passing (56% completion %) and 1 TD
Corey Fuller – 124 yards receiving with 1 TD
TOP 31:29 to 28:31 edge
5 Sacks of EJ Manuel netting 44 yards in losses

The Bad:
EJ Manuel 326 yards passing w/ 3 TDs
87 yards rushing on 36 attempts (2.4 YPC)

The Ugly:
Surrendering an 8 play, 68 yard drive in 1:33 to suffer yet another last-minute, heartbreaking defeat


2013 – Alabama 35, VT 10

The Good:
20 carries for 132 yards for Edmunds (6.6 YPC)
Holding Alabama’s potent offense to 206 yards and 6 of 17 on 3rd down (35%)
4 sacks of A.J. McCarron
Kyle Fuller – 1 INT – 2 pass break-ups
Trey Edmunds 77 yard touchdown run leading to confused Alabama fan at 22 second mark

The Bad:
59 yards passing on 5 of 26 attempts (19%)
3 of 17 on 3rd down conversions (18%)

The Ugly:
I INT return of 38 yds for touchdown; 1 KO return of 94 yds for touchdown; 1 Punt return of 72 yds for touchdown
