Hokies lose at Georgia Tech

Virginia Tech was defeated 62-51 by Georgia Tech to close the regular season on Saturday afternoon in Atlanta.  The Hokies are 9-21 and 2-16 in league play heading into this week’s ACC Tournament.  The Yellow Jackets improved to 15-16 overall and 6-12 in ACC games.

For the second straight game, Joey van Zegeren set a career high in scoring.  After posting 14 points against Maryland, the r-sophomore center had 21 points on 9-of-17 shooting against Georgia Tech.  VT’s first four baskets of the second half were dunks by van Zegeren, who has played his best basketball in the last two games following a 2-point, 0-rebound perforamnce against UNC last weekend.  He also had seven rebounds (six of them offensive rebounds), a block and a steal.

Unfortunately for the Hokies, van Zegeren didn’t get much help.  Ben Emelogu finally returned from his injury and had eight points off the bench.  Devin Wilson added six points and five assists.  Jarell Eddie finished with only five points on 2-of-10 shooting.  Tech was without C.J. Barksdale, Adam Smith and Cadarian Raines due to injury.

The Hokies shot just 37.7% from the field and only 26.1% from three-point range.  Georgia Tech, who entered the game ranked #240 in the country in offensive efficiency, shot 49% from the field and were fairly efficient despite the slow pace of the game.

Virginia Tech will return to action on Wednesday in the ACC Tournament.  They will be the #15 seed, and will take on #10 seed Miami at 3:30pm.  The game will be televised by the ACC Network and ESPN2.

  1. Why all the doom and gloom about the basketball team??? Things have lined up perfectly for us in the ACC tourney….we play Miami in the first round and we swept them in the regular season!!! That’s a guaranteed win and just what the doctor ordered for us to make a run to the championship! I’ve already pre-ordered a thousand VT 2014 ACC basketball championship hats and t-shirts.

    1. I like your attitude.

It is kinda funny or maybe just coincidental we get to play the only ACC team we’ve beaten this year. So, there is a chance?

  2. Who is coaching this team. If you want a first time head coach, why not Dell Curry. He has the know-how and all the right connections.
