NYTimes quotes Swarbrick on future football membership

The conference also offered a more permanent home should the Irish decide to join a football conference. The A.C.C. moved to discourage a departure by increasing its exit fee to three times the conference’s operating budget for financing championships and other projects, a fee that would currently be about $50 million.

“If something should change, we’re committed to the A.C.C.,” Swarbrick said. “We would expect this to be the home, if we made a change. But our intention is to remain independent.”

That is a well scripted message to ND alumni base that conference football membership lies in the the future for ND. It allows ND to remain independent for the moment while giving Swarbrick the needed time to sell conference football membership to his alumni base. Both sides have the end target in sight just need to allow time to work it out. Once entry to the BCS playoff requires winning a conference championship Swarbrick can say to his alumni that they now must give up independence.

Big donors slowed this down, but the end game is closer than ever and many ND alums are waking up to that fact.

Notice that Golic kept saying if the Super Conferences happen then that is a game changer for football and the Super Conferences have never been closer.

Thanks for that perspective. Yesterday was yet another step toward the super conferences. It is only there where ND can no longer maintain their FB independence IF, repeat IF, winning a Conference CG is a pre-requsite or major formula element to select 4 teams in playoff.
