Paterno knew exactly what he had done (enabled) before he died. His wife knew, every member of his family knew. They ALL chose to worship the phony god of college football more than to admire ethical behavior.
For anyone to pretend otherwise is for those same people to deny the truth. Joe Paterno knew what side of honesty and truth he chose, and he laid down with his pretend legacy and phony ethical pretense in favor of doing the right thing. Everybody with a conscience knows that, but only those with any sort of a moral compass admit Paterno was a fraud.

Joe Paterno was indeed a coward, and an immoral fool, at that. He knew EXACTLY what he enabled - the rape of innocent young boys by one of his klan, and Paterno deliberately let it continue, because football glory was more important to him than ethics and morality. Some of us pretend it's about something else, but it is not. It is about the glorification of a pastime. Paterno was a gutless coward, and he enabled other gutless cowards in their sick twisted deeds.
Frankly, to use the movie phrase - 'He deserves to burn in Hell!...'
I sincerely hope he does, and that all who excuse his behavior because of their own twisted morality do the same.
I think you're probably right.
The program itself isn't going anywhere, but I would guess that they're probably in for some hard times on the field in years to come. I can't imagine being a Penn State assistant coach and having to go into a prospect's house and recruit a kid and his parents in the face of this kind of horrible publicity. It'll eventually fade, but my guess is that it'll be several years before Penn State will be able to recruit at the same level at which they've recruited in the past.
After all, if you were a top-flite prospect with his choice of schools, would you want to go to Penn State right now?
NCAA aside, the university itself needs to either shut down it's football program or self impose penalties.
The indictment on the university is that it put football above all else--those kids, students, alumni, academics, etc. That should never happen.
If I'm their BOT, I'm self imposing at least a three year post season ban, a TV ban, a big reduction of scholarships and reduced funding. I'm also setting up a standing independent office to ensure compliance at all levels.
Some experts have said that the actions outlined today don't technically qualify as NCAA violations. PSU needs to do it on its own.
