Pitt will have the first say on that on 9/15/12.**
If you avoid these lapses in the future, then you will be correct. Can Venables prevent WVU-type debacles? At least he won't have lack of talent to blame if he doesn't.
My only beef with Clemson & FSU was what was being written about them headed to the Big-12. I know the two schools probably didn't have any real plans for jumping to that disfunctional conference, but just having all of the buzz coming from their supporters (and in some cases, their school officials). But my beef: don't whine about the ACC's contract if you haven't been holding up your own. Until last year, Clemson hasn't been nationally relevant in 20 years, FSU - 10 years. Have a feeling if both schools were still playing at an elite level, there would have been no discussions about the ACC being worthless & weak, and our television contract would have been significantly higher.
I welcome Clemson (and FSU) raising their game. Everyone needs to win their ACC OOC games (and trust me, that's been VT's biggest weakness - lost at least three bowl games we should have won - UGA, KU & Meeeechigan). Clemson did a great job beating Auburn! Hopefully we'll be able to hold our own against Bama next year - especially if LT returns for his senior year.

Hey BigTiger - Thanks for visiting our board and giving your respectful opinions. I hope we meet in Charlotte year after year. We had a blast this year tailgating with and talking some friendly smack with all of the Clemson fans. Good luck in Tallahassee this year.
Dabo is a cocky guy and players tend to feed off of their coaches. I could see them being overconfident when we go in there this season. And in the past, nobody has cicled the wagons better than Frank, so while it will be tough, I can see us winning that game. What I don't like is the Clemson, Miami, FSU back to back to back thing. Thats a tough schedule to navigate.
And yet, from 2000 to 2011, VT ranked 9th in players drafted into the NFL with 52 including 4 first roudners. In that same time frame, Clemson had just 29 with 4 first rounders, and Pitt also had 29. Seems to me that VT has had pretty good talent, and with better talent, beat most of the teams with lesser talent in that time frame which included the likes of Clemson. It is simply your cognitive bias that others have more talent than VT, and VT gets by on grit and maximum effort. That *may* have been true at one time, but VT is a top 25 recruiting school, and with its player development prowess, fields much more talent than you perceive, not elite, but very good to excellent. So please stop with that VT doesn't have enough talent to compete. VT is not elite, but certainly middle of the pack in that next tier in terms of both talent and performance.
It seems that since you have the right benchmark, top 25ish talent, excellent player development and coaching, then the place you have it wrong is that the above should win vs top 10 competition on an overwhelming basis.
The team and program you described, and I agree with the position of, has no business being a top 10 team nor beating top 10 teams except in that outlier situation.
For the most part compared to those top 10 teams, VT does not have enough talent to win against those teams like that.
