Kentucky is recruiting him because they had players bolt and they are looking to fill out a roster spot. NC State is recruiting him because they had a player transfer. Just like VT might be recruiting some guys right now to fill out a roster spot that we might not have recruited otherwise. The bottom line is that none of those teams were recruiting him when he committed to Virginia Tech. He had a good season at Hargrave, but he's just a runner, jumper and dunker. His offensive skills are raw. We know nothing about his basketball IQ. Or his defense. Or his screening. Or his passing. Etc, etc.
I'll put it this way...he's not nearly as highly ranked as Dorian Finney-Smith coming out of high school, and Tech fans were disappointed with him despite an All-Freshman season in the ACC. He's not nearly as refined as Jeff Allen was offensively at the same stage, and in fact is ranked lower than Allen by most serviced.
Don't get me wrong, I'd like to have him in the program. But many fans are putting this guy on a pedestal right now, and all he's really don't is run, jump and dunk in a couple of all star games where everybody lets the other team run, jump and dunk just for show.
The reason I liked Harrell and thought he'd be better at least initially than DFS was his size. I think DFS will get there soon but he was just to skinny his freshman year to take full advantage of his skills.
"Reasons" ahead of the Greenberg firing are of real importance.
Without getting into why or personal stuff, he didn't want to be here
What percentage was his "discovering" he was much more of a hot commodity with options he didn't think he had when he signed? i.e. he now thinks of himself as being at a higher level than VT?
What percentage had to do with Seth being fired?
What percentage was something else personal with him that had nothing to do with the relative place on the college football pecking order VT is compared to the schools who are hot after his services now?
I dont have any idea of percentages to assign to your question, i truly dont, especially the football aspect of it...I can say his reversal occurred well in advance of the coaching change...When precisely that originated, I have no idea...
Worst part is the stigma that his taking back the LOI and DFS's transfer gives the program. Other recruits are going to wonder why.
In this case, at least changing coaches offers an easy, albeit not completely true, explanation. If Harrell had asked for his release and DFS announced his transfer while Seth was still the coach that would have really been a PR nightmare. With that said, college recruiting is about relationships and while we all look at things on the macro level, most recruits take a much more micro view of the situation. As such, I don't think these two guys leaving does anything overly negative to VT's ability to recruit. If anything, it opens up more spots and lets JJ sell the new face of VT angle.
