Many point to the fact that he turned down Illinois and NC State as reasons why he'd have no interest in VT, but I don't think you can use that logic for one reason...expectations.
Illinois and NC State have a solid tradition, but they aren't what I'd consider "elite" programs. They aren't UNC, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, UCLA, and so forth. Like Greenberg, Bruce Weber was at Illinois for nine years and took them to the NCAA Tournament six times and had one regular season Big 10 title. NC State has been canning one coach after another because they feel they should be at UNC or Duke's level...they aren't.
So, Shaka Smart could go to Illinois and have a good run as their head coach, but it's been shown that over a nine year stint that you'll get canned for the solid numbers that Weber produced there. Same with NC State. If you don't compete with UNC and Duke, you're going to get canned.
Now for VT - We'd give Greenberg a lifetime contract if he produced the numbers that Weber did at Illinois. If you simply prove that you can take VT to the NCAA Tournament on a somewhat consistent basis, you'll likely be labeled an "elite" coach. We don't have those expectations like they do at Illinois or NC State.
So, while I think the odds of us getting Smart are less than 40% or so, I don't think it's the slam dunk that some seem to think.
When is the last time VT made a "WOW" BB coaching hire? - I can't remember one.
He just stated his opinion that it isn't going to happen. He wasn't debating Kingsland. I would assume he knows what he is saying and doesn't need to elaborate at this point. Maybe when it's all over he can go into reasons. Smart and his family love Richmond, His wife has a great job, loves the area, he's King of the school, makes a great salary, etc....I don't see why some people feel this is a no-brainer for him to come to VT....I'm sure we've made some feelers and he's told us no....and I'm sure we don't want to make a big public dispaly of chasing after him when we already know the answer is no....
