My question related to the current article about the OLmen... what about Benedict, the transfer from UGA? Just no mention of him at all, and it is my understanding he may be in position to be a starter, or at least in the rotation to get a lot of game experience this fall. Has something happened to him?
I was very impressed with how Andy picked up where Kyle Tucker left off, but with a more polished approach. He didn't seem to miss a beat. Maybe that polish and professionalism raised my expectations, so when Andy wrote about Marcus Vick... I came down hard on him, at least in my mind.
Usually Andy is very thorough, so again I am surprised he overlooked Benedict (unless I missed some news concerning Benedict).
I'll give him a break... Andy may have been called upon to get a story on the Norfolk St. Basketball team's big win, about the time he was working on the VT OL article.
I do like Andy's current series with positions and interviews with coaches.... so most of the time I agree 100% with your comment and encouragement for Andy.
Eventually I will get over Marcus Vick being associated with VT, still.
You mean nothing other than the entire paragraph about Benedict?
So an article about Lee Suggs would be bad too, since he left VT more than 5 years ago? Or is the issue that MVII is a jerk. I see nothing wrong with reporting on ex VT players.
We havenít heard a whole lot about Benedict, a Georgia transfer. What about him?
ďAnd we donít know a whole lot about him. Weíll find out more. He wasnít eligible in the fall, so youíre not going to spend a lot of time. He canít help you win on Saturdays. Heís down on the scout team doing some drills. But really like where heís at right now, his attitude. Heís been good in the weight room. Great report about him. Big, physical, strong guy. Tough guy. Got a chance to be a physical presence. In the zone play, youíre looking for vertical or a horizontal push, whatever you can get based on their alignment. And heís a guy who I think can create space. I think he can do that. Big guy. Heís 6-5, 311 [pounds] right now. Very physical guy.Ē

As pk pointed out, there is an entire paragraph on Benedict. There's even a picture! Haha, not sure how you missed that.
I don't quite understand your anger with the Vick article. VT sports reporters should never talk about past players? Or just not when they do something bad? It wasn't even a blog post dedicated to Marcus. It was less than 10 sentences, basically a passing thought, at the end of a blog about Hosley. I see no issue there
Wow... I reopened the AB link and it was a different article... or it didn't open correctly... there were only 4 paragraphs, basically outlining Srs, Jrs, Sos, and Freshmen... Benedict was not listed... in what I read. There were hardly any pictures. The current article, link is more of what I expected from an AB article.
My sincerest apologies... but the short 4 paragraph sketch of an article is all that opened up when I first clicked on that link. It is now a much different article than what I first read. Technical difficulties??? Somewhere, somehow.
My problem isn't with Andy Bitter as much as it is with the media in general, choosing to use bad apples as news worthy subjects. There are so many other great people out of Virginia Tech, who never get mentioned in "news worthy" articles.
Andy, I'm sorry.... the current OL article you wrote is very thorough and well written, researched and professional. It just wasn't what I first read when I clicked on the link, for whatever reason.
Now I would love to read an article about Lee Suggs... VT didn't sever ties with him like they did MV2. I would also like to read an article on Brandon Ore if he turned his life around and was doing something positive... I just don't see how Marcus Vick's legal trouble 6 years after being a Hokie, and expelled from VT, still makes VT sports news. That's all. The rest about Benedict was a technical glitch that I reacted poorly to.
I get that you don't like seeing unpleasant stuff, but drawing a distinction based on the pleasantness of the information is no way to run a newsroom.Originally Posted by Havertown Hokie
Like it or not, when a Vick f-s up, it's VT-related news, and that's not Andy's fault. No one complained about the free publicity when Marcus signed with VT out of high school, or when ESPN nationally televised a meaningless game against Central Florida because he might get some playing time, or when they gave 'Marcus Vick makes Virginia Tech debut' its own item on the ESPN ticker. This is the flip side of that; when a guy gets that much attention for your school you really hope he turns out like Bryan Randall or Ty Taylor, because you're going to keep hearing about him for the rest of his life. Them's the breaks.
Hopefully, not in the face of the media, he knows his group got whooped
