Because Long Beach St and South Florida are always NCAA tourney teams, both before and after SG was there. You are judging him taking LBST and South Florida to the tournament as credentials? Have you ever been to either school or seen their facilties? Do you know that both are commuter schools with fan bases that resemble a JC? Long Beach St. played in a gym for much of SG's tenure that was the size of my high school gym...actually, it was smaller. Seriously, the ceiling at either of those schools was what SG acomplished. How many coaches has South Florida been through since SG left? I think they are on their third and still losing, even with the advantage of Big East membership. That is a place where coaches go to die...
I get it though...many of you are the same fans that think the football is going to win a MNC one of these years with recruiting classes ranked in the 30's & 40's. Realistic...not so much.
Man. Such a solid post, only to throw it away in the last few lines...
So you are saying Seth is a proven commodity at the big time college basketball level? If he is a proven commodity, I guess it's stupid that so many of us are even contributing to this debate. I guess we sit back and enjoy until Kansas or Pitt comes and takes Seth from us......
'Big time'? Absolutely not. No one is saying that.
But Taking VT, a historically bad program, with all of the BS that has gone against them, to be the 3rd winningest ACC coach in his tenure. Absolutely he has established himself as a solid coach at the college level.
I think that there would be more good will had we made the NCAA tourney a few more times.
I do give him a ton of credit for doing what he has done here. I believe some are starting to think he may have brought us as far as he can due to:
-Bad losses that put us on the bubble in the first place the last few years
-A bad half court offense
-At best- an odd tone of diplomacy with players and media. He recruits well but you dont see a ton of former players praising his guidance.
I think he that if they miss the next 2 tourney he will be gone. Personally I think he has earned at least 3.
Excellent post. A concise statement of Coach SG's talents and issues. One addition is that SG is a bit emotional, and I suspect that too much yelling might take a toll on player morale over the course of a stressful season. IMHO SG is an overall solid coach who has underperformed at times, maybe too many times.
Of course, hiring a new coach is not a panacea. VT could do better, but we also could do worse. I think some patience would be prudent, because firing a pretty solid coach with a winning record will turn off some prospective coaching candidates. Consider the tribulations of NC State after they fired Sendak.
Kansas has a b-ball educated fanbase and still freaks out about losses to the Bucknells and Bradleys of the world. Even with a title people asked Self about the Elite Eight losses. So it's not just a fanbase spoiled by football success. All coaches take flak. Tar Heel fans once hung Dean Smith in effigy. So it's not a recent development either. Seth's coaching in the ACC and we've been w/o an NCAA appearance a while. That makes for criticism. After we break through, he'll be immune for a while. Then, like Gary Williams, we'll start scrutinizing him again.
Butler went to back-to-back title games. They got there on merit. On a given night, VCU can beat Kansas. But combined with four other consecutive tourny wins, there's a trend that tells you that was an excellent team that got hot at the right time. If b-ball was that random, Duke and UNC wouldn't own the ACC year after year. There are 30+ games a year to balance out the flukes.
Well, Clemson has never won in Chapel Hill. They'd love some more variance. It's more a merit system when you consider that things balance out over time. For years, the ACC tournament was called the "Duke Invitational". I'm sure UVa fans consider the game in Charlottesville a fluke, and whether it was will depend on what happens next. A win might be a fluke, a winning percentage over the course of a year isn't.
"Suk it"? Isn't that a TOS violation?
Yeah, I admit SG has coaching flaws. But what coach doesn't? Coach DeVoe had flaws. Coach Moir did, too. BFD. The team is going through a tough time right now. A fickle fan is one that praises the coach when times are good and calls for his firing when times go south. If it was up to our fickle fanbase, Coach Beamer would've been fired after the 1992 season.
I rest my case.
Then there are the fans that look at his entire history both good and bad, and decide that VT can do better. If you are over 45 years old, you have seen better basketball at VT.
Starting with the UNC game, I saw some very positive things from the coach and this team. And it looks like this bunch of kids can get us into the NCAA's. But then what?
SG's history over his career is likely to be repeated.
