How early in a HS career do we start recruiting? We should get into Thon Maker

Thon Maker (7ft, 200 lbs-ish) is a sophomore center at Carlisle in Martinsville, VA...he just scored is 1,000th point in his latest game. Looking around at the usual online suspects, he is the number one prospect in Virginia and has lots of offers and interest already, from the like of Duke, UVa, Arizona, Georgetown, and others....but not VT. So I was wondering what would be stopping us from being on that list of interested schools.

Are we not in the mix because we just don't recruit that early, and that he won't even be graduating until 2016? OR do we just feel we won't have a chance at this kid and spend our time with realistic pursuits?

Here's a couple of links about Thon:

We're not on his list because VT is not Duke, Arizona, Georgetown and the like in basketball. Pretty simple. That much talent, you go to a phenomenal program.

Basketball recruiting can start as early as 7th or 8th grade.

Hard to believe he's the #1 prospect in VA, considering he's playing for Carlisle. Never thought they could compete with the local public HS teams...

Speaking of height... I remember back in the day when Tunstall HS had a front court that measured 7', 6'10", and 6'8". Only one of those guys made it into a major program (the 7' guy went to UNC), and he primarily rode the bench. I don't even think they won the district that year. Martinsville was the BB king back then...

If VT wants a realistic chance to sign a quality big man, then it may have to look overseas. It is going to be tough for VT to be able sign even an American "sleeper" than a foreign born "sleeper." I use "sleeper" here because the big name programs are not pursuing the recruit. If they were pursuing the recruit, then I don't believe VT can compete right now. The only way VT could sign a recruit away from Duke, Kansas, Arizona, or Syracuse is if it took a page out the The Shark's recruiting book. Would that mean Blacksburg is trying to become the next Las Vegas? Inquiring minds want to know.

If we haven't offered, that makes NO sense....or maybe it does, because our staff just doesn't care about truly competing and growing our program

VT could compete for elite bigs, just need the right staff in place to do it.

Cville sighting! Please play over here more

What could the staff do to get us in more with elite bigs (or elite anyone for that matter)?

Also back in the day...when Drewry Mason was still a highschool, we had a kid named Tim Martin, same 7-ft-ish center type who was so much taller than everyone else, you could just throw the ball up in the air and he could catch it and score above anyone. But when he went to play at UVa, things weren't that simple, and there wasn't much playing time. Martin looked like a sure thing, but ti certainly didn't work out that way.
