Has a state university ever been sold, thus becoming a private university?

Kinda. UCLA's business school is now private.

I did find several reports that the University of Michigan was close to becoming a private university in order to help the state save money.

I found this article concerning our "good friends" the University of Charlottesville (I mean UVwho....UVA).

non-profit organizations can't be "sold"...they don't have owners to do the selling or shares to be sold

even if some or all of public school "goes private," it is still likely going to be non-profit

in light of that, I don't think PSU truly "bought" Dickinson Law School

South University was a private non-profit school that was "sold" to Education Management Corp for $50 million and is now a for-profit university.

It appears that Oregon, Oregon State, and Portland State will become private schools next July.

I found that information when I was searching to learn more about the school's history (since I never heard of it before). South U. has had a couple of different names, so it is possible it was a non-profit under a former name. Where I found it didn't give a clear indication, so I assumed it remained a non-profit under the South U. name.

well, it certainly wasn't non-profit when it was sold by that guy for $50 million...I see no indication that it ever was

You are correct at the time it was sold it was a for-profit university. Recently there have been a number of for-profit universities switching to non-profit. I found this article which suggests that Alliant University's San Diego campus could become a for-profit (if sold).

Unfortunately, I am not able to find a follow up story to determine whether it was sold or not.

It appears that even the UK is not immune to the selling of universities.
