Question #1 through #124: where would you R.A.T.T. rank VT football nationally pre-spring?

(yes, 4 new D-1 teams enter the fold next year)

However, include the following in your calculations:
    * struggling 7-6 2012 season
    * 6 starters back on offense (LT3 did return)
    * new Offensive Coordinator/Qb-coach, new oLine coach, new Wr's coach
    * do they have their parts in 2012?

    * 9 back once Exum returns on defense
    * though who starts where in the secondary post-Ex?
    * who takes over 'backer and Whip?
    * the rest looks pretty tight

    * both Specialists return (Cody is prolly all-A.c.c.)

Sooooooooooooooooo..............when you sum all of that up; where should Virginia Tech rightfully rank in national terms heading into the Spring???

    TIA!

I think what we have on D will make us at worst a top 40 or so team, but the o has many ??? on the player and coaching front it is hard to tell. I'd like to think they will perform better than last year, which puts us in the top 15-25 IMO. But who knows right now.

Being a RAT... 70. However a RATT look at things... 30. Looking at a 7-6 season we would have been ranked about 55 based on W/L. We barely escaped being 4-8, which would be around 85.

It is tough to be objective about where we have been last season and where we envision our team with new offensive coaches. Our defense is likely to be a top 10 defense (caution... we thought similar thoughts last year), but there's even less doubt about our D as most are returning from playing very good defense for the last month, almost doing enough to beat FSU.

I bring the FSU game up for a reason. That was by far the best game VT played (as a balanced team) last year. I think this game should weigh heavy in trying to predict next season. Our offense should be better to significantly better, and our D should be playing at high level. The very best VT could do next year is 11-1, for the regular season. We would have to play like we did against FSU last year for the entire season... is that asking too much?? Probably and realistically. There's even a chance VT gets very lucky against Alabama, but let's be serious... VT is likely to lose by double digits to Bama. The Coastal division opponents are as stout as we have seen in the past 10 years... UNC, GT, Miami and PITT all have a decent chance to beat VT. BC, UVA, Duke as well as Marshall and ECU are about the same caliber teams, with each other... not that any of them couldn't have a great game the same time VT has a lousy game and pull off the upset. After last season... VT lost any presumptuous thinking about any of their opponents. A new offensive coaching staff will be out to prove their value immediately, and they don't have terrible players to work with. Our RB situation should be much better, but probably not up to the level we had with DE and RW and DW, but any kind of solid ground game will help the passing game and balance out the offense.

I'm still leaning on a 9-3 season, hoping for better, knowing 8-4 is a good possibility as well. For me that puts VT about a 30 to 35 range. If our defense is a stone wall, and our offense figures out how to score... then VT should break into the top 25 again.

A rational preseason prediction puts VT around 30 to 35 IMO.

#15...Not that I think VT is going to be great but one can pick apart just about every team's weaknesses. I do think VT hit the perfect storm last year (poor Defense early, Logan regressed, horribly OL & new RB, terrible OC, worst ST in some time). However, I expect the new coaches to make the offense better (how can it be worse?), I expect Logan to bounce back this year and I think the poor year last year will help. Things came too easy for him his first year starting. We will see much improved play on the OL, at RB, and at WR (effort wise at very least). Sometimes people need a reality check and I think the coaches and fans got theirs last year. We can rest on what we did in the past and we need to work even harder. Frank making changes tells me he's not ready to throw in the crowd. We have a much more manageable schedule.

Until I see something to the contrary, I'd have us ranked 26-30. I wouldn't underplay our bowl win and the way we closed out. I just want to see what kind of energy our new coaches bring. Our D alone keeps us in the top 30.

I'm thinking 15 or so. The D is legit. And I think LT gets back to Sophomore form. That should equate to
