The rumor had been circulating for days, but the news in now confirmed. Virginia Tech announced on Tuesday that defensive lineman Vinny Mihota will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a left knee injury vs. Pittsburgh.

“I share Vinny’s disappointment that he’ll miss the rest of the season,” said head coach Justin Fuente in a statement. “But based off of last offseason, I also know no one will rehab more diligently than Vinny to get back on the field with his teammates. We look forward to Vinny making a complete recovery.”

Tech announced that Mihota will undergo surgery to repair his left knee next week.

Injuries are beginning to mount for the Virginia Tech defense. Mihota joins Divine Deablo and Terrell Edmunds as defensive players who have been shelved with season-ending injuries. A couple Hokies are dealing with less serious injuries, as cornerback Adonis Alexander battles a hamstring issue and whip/nickelback Mook Reynolds continues to play through a hip injury. Reynolds was also knocked out of the Pittsburgh game late in the fourth quarter, and his status for Tech’s game vs. Virginia on Friday is unknown.

Mihota, a redshirt junior, has been an important piece to the Virginia Tech defense this season. Mihota has started all 11 of Virginia Tech’s games at defensive end, and has also filled in at defensive tackle behind Tim Settle and Ricky Walker. This season, Mihota made 24 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.
