Virginia Tech Athletics has made a recent effort to document historic moments in program history. The latest moment to get the treatment? The ‘Miracle in Morgantown.’

The ‘Miracle in Morgantown’ documentary tells the tale of Virginia Tech’s dramatic win over West Virginia in the 1999 season, as the Hokies downed the Mountaineers 22-20, thanks to a game-winning field goal from Shayne Graham.

This is the second documentary published by HokieVision in recent weeks. On April 25, HokieVision published the ‘Miracle on Dirt’ documentary, recapping Virginia Tech softball’s win over Team USA in 2008.

  1. I was at that game and went from comfortable (19-7) to almost physically ill (20-19) to euphoric (22-20). The best part was listening to the WVU postgame on the drive back to the hotel. It was as if someone died listening to Don N. The Hokies survived every break going against them (the sack fumble that went for a safety not a touchdown, he kickoff fumble ruled a forward pass that should have resulted in 1st and goal at the WVU 1 yard line, the fumble on the kickoff after a vicious hit that just happened bounce to WVU’s fastest player and returned deep into Hokie territory, etc.). It was a great experience and a game I dust off and watch every so often.

  2. That game is unforgetable, I had to catch it on-line on the radio because I lived in Arizona back then… great memories, and great job with the documentary. I would’ve like to see Vick’s point of view in an interview though.

  3. …that game shortened my lifespan by several years. Nice little doc. A game I’ll never forget and easily one of the hallmark games in VT football history.

I can still remember the feeling I had the moments before Shayne’s kick. It was like a mix between euphoria and acute panic, but also a confidence that there was a good chance he’d make the kick.

    1. As a sidenote, that video also reminds us of what a rivalry VT-Morganhole was back then and for a long time. Yeah, UVA has always been our defacto arch-rival, but really for 15 to 20 years nothing matched the emotion, competitiveness and vehemence of that rivalry. Just downright nasty in sort of a Auburn-Bama way.

  4. Fantastic…….. and so happy I was there looking right down the right hash mark from the far end zone!!!!

    What a great memory
