Landers Nolley Headlines Virginia Tech Men’s Basketball’s Class of 2018

Sponsored by The Southeast Regional Training Center (SERTC): The SERTC is critical to the success of the Virginia Tech Wrestling program. Our goal is to continue to grow the SERTC and add at least one more athlete/coach this season. In order to do so, we need all Hokies to get on board! Your donation can make a huge difference. With the 2017-2018 season just a day away from tipping off, Virginia Tech men’s basketball announced three official members for the Class of 2018.

The Hokies signed guards Jonathan Kabongo and Jarren McAllister, as well as forward Landers Nolley. All three will enroll at Virginia Tech in the fall of 2018, after this season.

“We are very excited to add these three outstanding young men to our program,” said head coach Buzz Williams in a press release. “Any day you welcome players into your program is special, but these young people will add talent, work ethic and a desire to be part of what we are building. This trio will fit well into the fabric and culture of our program and will be vital parts in our growth, both on and off the court.”

Nolley is the highest-rated recruit of the trio. The 6-foot-7, 205-pound forward from Fairburn, Ga. is rated as a 4-star recruit and the 55th-best player in the Class of 2018 by Rivals. Nolley won state championships at two different high schools, and held offers from schools like Auburn, Connecticut, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Illinois, NC State, Oklahoma State and Penn State.

“He is a back-to-back state champion in two different states and one of the best shooters in the nation,” Williams said. “Having a father that has played at the highest levels of college basketball has helped him develop into a outstanding young man and as a player. His versatility, length and athleticism will be great additions to our program. Chez brings with him to Blacksburg the ability to stretch the defense from day one and that skill is very valued in our program.”

Kabongo is a guard listed at 6-foot-4 and 180 pounds. He hails from Toronto, but is finishing his senior season at Putnam Science Academy in Connecticut. Kabongo is rated as a 3-star recruit and held offers from Missouri and Washington State.

“Jonathan Kabongo brings great playmaking and scoring ability to our team,” Williams said. “He knows how to play the game and his great attitude is infectious. Jonathan is outstanding with the ball in his hands and makes smart plays that help his teammates succeed. He is another outstanding player from the rich Canadian system.”

Finally, the Hokies also signed McAllister, a 6-foot-4, 185-pound guard from Wake Forest, N.C. McAllister was named to the 2017 North Carolina Coaches Association All-District team, and is rated as a 3-star prospect by Rivals.

“Jarren McAllister is an ‘OKG’,” Williams said. “He brings a winning attitude and elite athleticism to our program. He is one of the best transition finishers in the country and has amazing defensive potential. He is what we call a “switchable”, he can play almost every position offensively and defensively.”

Virginia Tech men’s basketball begins their season on Friday night, as the Hokies host Detroit Mercy in Cassell Coliseum. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
