In total, 167 ballots were cast, and 103 (61.7 percent) picked Miami to win the division, while 40 (23.9 percent) picked Virginia Tech to win the division. All other teams in the Coastal received at least four championship votes, except Virginia, the fourth year in a row that Virginia is the only Coastal team without a single division championship vote.

This is the fourth time Miami has been picked to win the division in 13 years of divisional play. (The ACC didn’t have divisions in 2004.) Virginia Tech has been picked to win the Coastal seven times in that time span. The other two picks have gone to Georgia Tech (2015) and North Carolina (2016).

  1. I hope this year turns out to be another Premature “Back”-ulation for the Canes

  2. UNC not getting enough credit for the new QB transfer, he has starting experience in toughest division in nation. It is possible for him to be as productive as the last 3 very good QBs at UNC/ Fedora offense. Also consider, defense is better and team depth is full strength.

    1. I get that the QB coming in has the potential to put up some numbers, but UNC lost 99% of its rushing production and 98% of its receiving production and returns only six starters. Last year’s team, despite the Hurricane Bowl, leaned heavily on offense to get wins.

Defensively, why do you say they will be better? They also return six on that side of the ball, including most of the front 7 that gave up 227 yards on the ground per game (worst in the ACC), and had but one interception on the season. Are you saying they have nowhere to go but up, or is it because they have a new coordinator — albeit running the same scheme?

  3. With the “new Sheriff in town”, Miami is understandable fav, but not my pic! Wish our game with UM was in Bburg, like on a Thurs night. UNC maybe up a place or two in Coastal.

  4. Being picked 2nd will generate some awesome locker room emotion. Might be what we needed. In Bud we trust.

  5. I live here in South Florida and all of my Canes friends just roll their eyes about being picked to win the coastal …. they do not believe anymore…. nor do they think they will beat Florida State … ever ! They no longer buy season tickets and say that the atmosphere at the games they go to is very poor with a half empty stadium….they also believe the players are flashy but not tough . They think the ‘ We Are Back’ slogan has become a media punchline

    1. Half empty stadium? They are being generous in describing it as 1/2 empty. Usually closer to 2/3 empty.

  6. VT and UM have very similar schedules except for we play our big non-conference foe (WVU) on a neutral site while UM gets ND at home. We each have a big, early season conference opener against top Coastal teams, so I see the matchup coming down to who wins the VT @ UM game plus any correction caused by the late season games against Pitt. Thankfully we play Pitt at home while UM plays @ Pitt.

Another similarity: both teams are trying to figure out which unknown will start at QB!

    1. Instead of “matchup” I meant “Coastal crown”, and instead of “top Coastal teams” I meant “top Atlantic teams”. Ugh, Mondays…

  7. Just get the Season going !! Like everyone else, we Are Ready . VT might pull it off again. Miami still laying eggs..

  8. with Rich at the helm, this isn’t your typical under-performing UM. I can see it.

  9. One of these years Miami actually IS going to win it. I am already picking VT to win in 2018, so maybe this will indeed be the year for the Canes.
