Virginia Tech added an unexpected commitment on Monday, as long snapper Oscar Shadley announced his decision on Twitter.

Shadley is a 6-foot-2, 230-pound recruit from Golden Gate High School in Naples, Fla. Shadley holds four full scholarship offers from Oregon, Marshall and Florida International. Shadley is slated to play in the Army All-American Game in January 2018.
Welcome aboard the Hokie Nation OS and we look forward to seeing you play. I bet an athlete like this can perform other situational duties as well and is certainly worth a scholarship.
I’d say a 6′ 2″ 230# long snapper is pretty good. It isn’t like he is the permanent center. Haven’t we had much smaller snappers before? What were Beamer Jr.’s numbers? I would say he could probably hold his own for those few seconds, especially with a little Hilgarting (sp?).
See my comment below for sizes of historic/recent long snappers at VT. 6-2, 230 and athletic sounds about right.
welcome Mr. S!
i worry about “smallish guys” on the line of scrimmage when there’s almost a jail break rush coming for the block. i used to be a 125 center on our neighborhood team and in pee wee. dunking was almost guaranteed as coaches didn’t teach many defensive techniques to avoid being totally embarrassed as well as being squashed.
i know this guy has been coached up better already and Shibest and company will continue the skilset development. but 270 to 300 D-lbs wears on a 230 lb center during a low scoring, multi-punting and lots of FG game.
I’m not an expert on long snappers, but most of them aren’t as big as OL. They need to snap, then get downfield and be a legitimate threat to make a tackle. IIRC, punt return teams aren’t allowed to put a guy over the snapper, so he’s actually free once he snaps the ball, so the faster the better.
Shane Beamer was 5-11 and played at about 190 pounds. Colin Carroll was more Oscar Shadley’s size: 6-3, 230. Wright Bynum, last year’s long snapper, was 6-4, 233.
Which of that group had the most tackles, most tackles per year? Thx
He will be 245 or 250 in no time.
One of the most important positions on the team that you don’t think about….until there is a screw up. Good snappers worth a scholarship.
Is he a lot “preferred” walk on, or is he receive a full scholarship.
I heard full scholarship.
