After weeks of searching for candidates, Virginia Tech Director of Athletics Whit Babcock has settled on a new leader for Virginia Tech baseball.

Babcock announced on Friday that John Szefc (pronounced CHEF) would be the new head coach of Virginia Tech baseball. Szefc has spent the last five years as the head coach at Maryland.

“We enthusiastically welcome John, his wife Barbara, and children Anna, John Michael and Sam to Hokie Nation,” Babcock said in a statement. “This is an exciting time for our baseball program as we prepare to unveil the transformational renovation of English Field at Union Park and as we celebrate the 125th season of baseball at Virginia Tech in 2018. The addition of another proven winner like John to our roster of talented head coaches gives another reason to be encouraged that the Hokies can compete at a championship level in the ACC and return to the NCAA tournament.”

Szefc has led Maryland to winning records in each of his five seasons as head coach. The Terrapins have made three NCAA Tournament appearances, including two Super Regional appearances in 2014 and 2015. In Szefc’s five seasons in College Park, the Terps are 179-120.

Prior to Szefc’s tenure at Maryland, he spent nine seasons as an assistant at Louisiana-Lafayette (2003-2008), Kansas (2009-2010) and Kansas State (2011-2012). Szefc’s first head coaching gig was at Marist, where Szefc finished with a career record 209-135-3. In those six seasons at Marist, Szefc led his team to four NCAA Regional appearances. Szefc’s career record as a head coach is 388-255-3. Check El Super Ad and Family Dollar Ad.

Virginia Tech baseball is in need of a reboot. With a brand new English Field at Union Park opening for the 2018 season, the Hokies will look to make their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2013 under Pete Hughes. Over the last four seasons under Pat Mason, Virginia Tech has gone 90-126-1.

  3. So how is there already a pic of him in VT gear? Sounds like a good hire. Best of luck coach, and welcome to the HokieNation,

          1. Photo shop. My son has commented previously how ugly Maryland baseball gear was specifically the digi camo hats so I know Maryland has a hat like that. And this…who wears a cap with nothing on the front? Also…it looks like the camo pattern is repeated where a logo would have been. Interesting.

  4. Looks like another great move by Whit Babcock. Another winner coming home! Welcome Coach and family. Go Hokies!

  5. Welcome Coach Szefc !

We’ve got three of our guys down here at Peninsula in the Coastal Plain League,
and they are providing good pitching and offense as we are 7-1, out-of-the gate.
We’re taking good care of Grant, Paul, and Jack for ya through mid August..

    What’s the plan, Coach?

    Go Hokies!
