Defensive Lineman Joe Kane Commits to Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech recruiting landed their sixth commitment for the Class of 2018 on Thursday, as defensive lineman Joe Kane announced his commitment on Twitter.

Kane is listed at 6-foot-3, 265-pounds and is a 3-star recruit out of Wake Forest, NC. Kane has 16 scholarship offers, including three from Power 5 programs. Wake Forest and Syracuse were the other Power 5 schools to pull the trigger.

Kane received an offer from Virginia Tech on April 1, after visiting that weekend. Since then, the Hokies have been a major player in his recruitment. At 265-pounds, Kane likely translates to the defensive tackle position in Bud Foster’s defensive scheme. Below are Kane’s junior season highlights.

Virginia Tech brought in two defensive tackles in last year’s class — Robert Porcher IV and JBril Glaze. The Hokies will likely take at least one more defensive tackle in the Class of 2018, and could take another, given Tech’s lack of depth at the position. Alim McNeill and Cam Goode figure to be near the top of the board, as does Jalen Alexander

  1. A man amongst boys. Looks bigger than 265 lbs. Quick off the line, can not be blocked, can run down ball carrier from back side. But this is high school. He’ll have to add at least 20 pounds and get used to playing against other men. Looks athletic enough that he could help at DT in 2-deep.

    1. Heritage is my daughter’s HS and this guy is an incredible talent and student. I can’t wait to see what happens after working with Bud’s group. Welcome Joe to Hokie Nation!

  2. Wooo hoooooo!!! NC2VT continues!!!!

Great need, great pick up & can contribute early.

    Let’s Go… Hokies!!’

  3. No doubt the kid has a great motor!! He left most of the OL lined up against him in the dust. Not sure how good the competition was in his league but clearly the kid has quick burst and nose for the football!!

    1. Heritage HS plays in the CAP-8 in Raleigh which is classification 4-AA, the highest in NC. 2 of his teammates have verballed to NCSU and Duke. Sanderson HS also plays in the CAP-8 which is the HS that Alim McNeill and Trent Pennix, both of whom we are recruiting attend. The competition in his league is definitely good competition.

    2. Heritage HS has an all-star coaching staff.
Dewayne Washington Head Coach (NC State / Pittsburgh Steelers DB)
Willie Parker Asst. Coach (UNC / Pittsburgh Steelers RB)
Torry Holt (NC State / St. Louis Rams WR)

Heritage HS and Wake Forest HS (roughly 5 miles apart) have developed strong football programs recently. Wake Forest just won the state title. Wake Forest HS is pumping out some great talent (e.g. RB has Alabama offer, DT is committed to UNC, LB committed to NC State, 2016 #2 National Prospect DE to Clemson, ). You will not find many schools in NOVA who have three D1 prospects for a single graduating year.
