The Virginia Tech Spring Game is finally upon us. The Hokies will take the field at Lane Stadium for the first time since last season, as they try to finish their spring practice schedule on a high note. However, there are plenty of things to take care of before that happens. Virginia Tech will start spring evaluations on Monday, and the staff will be spending most of their time on the road. Here’s a list of visitors who were on campus last week and last weekend.

Class of 2018: athlete Tre Turner, linebackers Dax Hollifield and Alan Tisdale, defensive back DJ Crossen, defensive end KJ Henry, wide receivers Darryl Jones and Armani Chatman

Class of 2019: running back Cameron Cloud

Class of 2020: athletes VJ Johnson and Nekhi Meredith

Note: Turner, Cloud, Hollifield and Crossen all visited during the week as opposed to the weekend.

The first thing that jumps out on that list is the amount of elite-level talent there. Tre Turner and Dax Hollifield are both high-end 4-star recruits, while KJ Henry is a 5-star recruit.

Turner visited with teammate Cameron Cloud on Tuesday. Virginia Tech is very high on Turner’s list, and could find themselves in a two-way race with North Carolina. Turner would play wide receiver at Virginia Tech and would fill that larger, taller receiving role for the Hokies. Turner is one of the highest receivers on the Hokies’ board.

Hollifield has been high on the Hokies from the beginning, although a rash of elite scholarship offers might have made him reconsider things. Hollifield likes Tech, as well as South Carolina, North Carolina and Notre Dame. Don’t be surprised if this recruitment drags on through next season.

Henry can go to school just about wherever he chooses. He has 29 scholarship offers and recently released a top-10, including the likes of Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Ohio State and the Hokies. For what it’s worth, Henry really seemed to enjoy his visit.

Granted, Virginia Tech isn’t as prestigious as some of the other programs on Henry’s list. But, the Hokies do have a puncher’s chance in what seems to be a relatively wide-open recruitment.

Getting Alan Tisdale on campus was important, especially after he missed his visit last weekend. Tisdale is one of several linebackers Virginia Tech is heavily recruiting at the moment, as are Hollifield, Payton Wilson and Keshon Artis. The Hokies had planned to only take two linebackers in this class, but that’s a lot of talent to only take two guys.

Virginia Tech also hosted multiple guys from the Mach 1 Academy in the 757 area of Hampton Roads. Bishop Sullivan High School’s Nekhi Meredith and VJ Johnson, Princess Anne High School’s Darryl Jones and Bayside High School’s Armani Chatman all visited over the weekend, which should help Virginia Tech recruiting efforts in that area this year. It’s too early to tell where Tech stands with Meredith and Johnson, while Jones and Chatman figure to have at least moderate interest.

Chatman was very high on Virginia Tech until the winter, and it seems as if the decommitment of Tahj Capehart had something to do with it. However, that decommitment hasn’t taken the Hokies out of the running and they have a chance to land at least one recruit from the Mach 1/Bishop Sullivan group in a year that’s relatively down on talent. Any positives this year down in the 757 would help with the recruitment of Tayvion Land, who decommitted from the Hokies in February.

  1. Good article. Especially the end. Good to face reality, but hopefully we can get him back.
