Virginia Tech added some much needed depth to their quarterback group on Friday as AJ Bush announced he would enroll with the Hokies in the spring semester.

Bush will practice with the team this spring, giving the Hokies an experienced quarterback on scholarship this offseason. Redshirt-freshman Josh Jackson has yet to see game action, while true-freshman Hendon Hooker is expected to redshirt this season. Tech’s other two quarterbacks, Jack Click and Chase Mummau, are both walk-ons.

Jerod Evans announced earlier this week that he would forego his final season of eligibility and declare for the NFL Draft. The move left Virginia Tech in a scramble to add quarterback depth, with Bush ultimately being the answer.

Bush is a 6-foot-4, 225-pound recruit who originally played for Nebraska. Bush then transferred to Iowa Western Community College, where he played in 10 games. Bush passed for 602 yards on 114 pass attempts and only completed 45.6 percent of those attempts. Bush also threw eight interceptions. He did run for 285 yards and five touchdowns.

  1. Not impressed with this young man numbers! I hope his potentials come to fruition!!!!

  2. Two final random thoughts for me:

    1. Man Coach Fuente doesn’t waste time.

    2. It’s somewhat spilled milk, but I wonder what Dwayne Lawson is thinking right now. Had he had stuck it out he could literally be the next guy at the helm. I watched him up close; The guy had a cannon for an arm. All he had to do was be patient and get his chance to possibly beat out Jackson.

  3. This is purely for depth. My take is that he backs up Jackson with Hooker serving as the emergency third stringer

    1. I’d bet we went with Click if we needed a THIRD option. No sense in burning Hookers RS for third string duty…At least that would be my HOPE.

Actually, I’m getting a bit of a feeling that Fu knows what he is doing, so I guess I’ll just go with that..LOL!!

  4. Georgia native. Took his HS to the state title in 2013. This will put him closer to home.

  5. I’ll go ahead and say it – we have a Hooker and a Bush at QB. Now we just need a Coker.

  6. Makes me think this has been in works for a week or two. Do not know we at done at QB, this feels like a backup plan amd spring depth, think Zaire is still option

  7. I believe the original plan was for Hooker to redshirt. He wasnt going to take the job from Evans. When Evans bolted, they asked him to enroll early. With Bush on board they aren’t forced to develope Hooker, but he can still practice this spring.

  8. Ehh. I hope this is more of needing depth than an indictment on the talents of Jackson.

  9. I thought Hooker was enrolling in January and would be allowed to practice this spring?

  10. Numbers aren’t like Evans coming out of JUCO. In Fuente We Trust! That’s an exclamation point, not a question mark.

  11. Two questions:

    1. Why isn’t Hendon Hooker permitted to practice in the spring?
    2. What is “Virginia tech university”

      1. Yeah but VPI&SU is NOT VTU?!?!?! I mean really… if you are going to commit to a school at least know how to say the school name the right way be it either way… lol

        1. Tyrod screwed up the school’s name when he committed and, as I recall, he still worked out OK…

          1. I disagree that he nor Tyrod blundered or screwed up our name.

Last time I checked our school is a University. We are One of only 106 Land Grant Universities in the US and our 6 US territories and 1 of only 2 Land Grant Universities in the state of Virginia.

I believe People are getting caught up in semantics. It’s not like the the young man said Virginia Tech College, he simply said University….he gave us the distinguished name we deserve.

    1. My credit card donation to Hokie Club shows as “Virginia Tech University ” on my credit card statement. I don’t think the bank made that up.

      1. Correct…the University changed the marketing name of VT to VTU several years ago I believe. Although the official name of VT is VPI & SU!
