When it came time to make his college choice, L.C. Bird (Chesterfield, VA) junior linebacker Rayshard Ashby says Virginia Tech and another local school were right there in contention. It was Virginia Tech, a school the talented prospect says he “liked watching” when he was younger, that scored the commitment, however.

“Maryland was right up there with them, but my gut just told me VT was the place for me,” Ashby wrote in an interview over Twitter direct message. “I always felt at home [at Virginia Tech]. I love the coaching staff and fan base. Plus, they have a great educational school.”

The 6’0″, 215-pound Ashby announced Virginia Tech pledge this past Saturday, giving the Hokies five 2017 Class commitments including three from the state of Virginia. Ashby, who represents Virginia Tech’s first Richmond metro area recruit since 2014, joined 4-star defensive end TyJuan Garbutt and defensive back Devante Smith as Tech’s in-state commits, giving head coach Justin Fuente a nice start to the “STATE-ment” he is trying to make in the Commonwealth.

Ashby’s commitment comes off the heels of visits he made to West Virginia on March 13 and Maryland on March 20. The Skyhawks star visited Virginia Tech on February 6, one of several trips he has taken to Blacksburg.
