Virginia Tech Spring Football Thoughts: Quarterback

Virginia Tech needed three quarterbacks last season. Michael Brewer was lost for half the season due to his shoulder injury, and Brenden Motley was banged up for the NC State game. I know lots of folks are angry about pulling Dwayne Lawson‘s redshirt, but even if he hadn’t played before the NC State game, he might have been pressed into action during that game anyway. When Motley left the game with an ankle injury, there was no way for the coaches to know whether it was a major injury or not, so they (naturally) put in their #2 quarterback…Lawson.

Still, it was obvious that the plan all along was to play Lawson, and I don’t agree with that plan. Lawson came from a background where academics weren’t stressed, and he was a qualification risk when he first committed to Tech. He was a great prospect, but he was rough around the edges in a lot of ways. Throw in the facts that he was going to have to learn Scot Loeffler’s dictionary-sized playbook in a short amount of time and his kid was going to be born in September, and to me it just seems like that’s too much to put on the plate of a guy from his background. I really have a hard time seeing why the staff thought that was going to work.

Here’s what I said about Lawson in an article from August 25, 2015…
