Special Teams Should Be Improved in 2015

Virginia Tech hit a low point in 2013 when they ranked #75 in special teams efficiency.  They improved to #42 last season, and hope to make a bigger jump in 2015.

Field Goal Efficiency: #63

Field goals drug Tech’s overall special teams efficiency down last season, though sometimes stats don’t tell the whole story.  Joey Slye (6-1, 214, So.) was a true freshman with a big leg, though he wasn’t particularly consistent early in his career.  Not only that, but Frank Beamer wasn’t shy about attempting long field goals with Slye.  He tried four field goals from beyond 50 yards in the regular season, and missed all of them.

Heading into the bowl game, Slye was just 16-of-24 on the season.  However, he went a perfect 4-of-4 against Cincinnati, including an impressive 49 yarder, to finish the season 20-of-28.
