The Virginia Tech Secondary Without CJ Reavis

I spent the weekend trying to figure out exactly what Virginia Tech’s secondary will look like without CJ Reavis, and I still can’t quite wrap my head around it.

We don’t know what Reavis did. There are a couple of rumors floating around, but from a football perspective it doesn’t matter. What matters is that he has jeopardized his future with some apparent bad decision making. There is an appeal process, but I’m not too optimistic about that. I’m preparing for Reavis to not play for Virginia Tech in 2015, or perhaps ever.

That would be a shame, because he’s got a ton of potential as a football player. He was destined to be a three-year starter, and I believe he was going to develop into an All-ACC type of player. He had an “it” factor that I liked. Hopefully things work out for him and the team, but I’ll say this: if this situation warrants him being completely dismissed by the university, then I support it. If he broke university rules, then he should have the same punishment that a regular student would receive. Likewise, if he is innocent I sincerely hope he wins his appeal process.

With that statement out of the way, let me say that I consider Reavis to be a substantial loss for the 2015 team, if indeed he doesn’t return. I believe he was going to be very good very quickly. We didn’t have great news last week with either Shai McKenzie or Reavis, but a buddy of mine texted me on Friday night and said “I’d trade two McKenzies and a first round pick for Reavis.” Considering McKenzie’s two ACL surgeries, I’d be inclined to agree.
