JoVonn Quillen Reflects On VT Visit, Commitment

Two days after giving Virginia Tech a verbal commitment, Hampton (VA) junior JoVonn Quillen Jr. was in Blacksburg on an unofficial visit.

“It was exciting,” Quillen recalled of the trip he took to Tech on February 28. “All of the coaches were talking to me. I even talked to Coach Beamer. I sat in his office. I spent a lot of time with my recruiter, Coach Cornell Brown. It was a great experience.”

Receiving and accepting a football scholarship to his dream school “feels good. It’s still kind of unbelievable,” Quillen said. “My focus right now is on my grades and making sure I get qualified.”

Quillen says he is “right there” in terms of qualifying academically. On the field, he is a standout dual threat quarterback and defensive back at Hampton High, which has produced top signal callers such as Ronald Curry and Tyrod Taylor. Quillen’s father, who attended Kecoughtan High School in Hampton, played against the former. The younger Quillen has gotten to know the latter over the course of the last several years.
