To the disappointment of coaches of Clemson, North Carolina, Michigan and Michigan State, class of 2015 cornerback DuWayne Johnson decided to put an end to his recruitment this past Saturday, when he verbally committed to Virginia Tech while attending a Junior Day recruiting event in Blacksburg. Prior to his commitment, Johnson was scheduled to visit those other schools in the weeks ahead.

“I decided to commit, but I didn’t plan on committing,” said Johnson, who boasted scholarship offers from all five aforementioned schools plus many others, including Georgia, Maryland, Miami and Southern Cal. “The plan was to come up and look at the academics, talk to coaches like Coach Beamer and Coach Foster. For some reason, it blew me away somehow. The new indoor facility is coming and will be there when I get there. Just a lot of stuff impressed me.”

Johnson, a 6’1”, 170-pound cornerback, is a product of H.D. Woodson High School (Washington, D.C.), a school Virginia Tech has enjoyed success in recruiting for a little over a decade. In the early 2000s the Hokies landed players such as defensive back Roland Minor and receiver Josh Morgan. More recently, Tech signed Darius Redman, the Hokies rising junior tight end.

Johnson’s father, Wayne, often made the trek to Blacksburg with Minor and Morgan. DuWayne would make those trips as well, so he was exposed to Virginia Tech football at a young age.
